Arrests Made in Manipur Attack

Security forces have apprehended two members of the banned People's Liberation Army (PLA) involved in the attack on an Assam Rifles convoy on September 19 in Manipur. This incident, which occurred in Bishnupur district, resulted in the deaths of two soldiers.


According to police reports released on Saturday, the arrested individuals are Thongram Sadanand Singh and Chongtham Mahesh, both of whom were engaged in militant activities.


Details of the Attack

The police confirmed that the two PLA members were involved in the assault on the 33 Assam Rifles in Nambol Sabal Leikai, Bishnupur district. The statement noted, 'Two members of the People's Liberation Army have been arrested in connection with the attack that occurred on September 19.'


Significant Success for Security Forces

One of the militants was captured in Guwahati, Assam, although the police did not disclose the location of the second arrest. On September 19, armed assailants ambushed a paramilitary vehicle, leading to the deaths of two Assam Rifles personnel and injuring five others.


The arrested individuals have been identified as 'Thongram Sadanand Singh alias Nagachik alias Purkapa (18) and self-styled Corporal Chongtham Mahesh alias Momo alias Amo Singh (51).' The statement further revealed that Chongtham is recognized as a highly senior cadre of the banned organization, having been associated with it since 1990, and was arrested with the assistance of the Crime Branch police station in Guwahati.


Ongoing Ethnic Violence in Manipur

Since May 2023, over 260 individuals have lost their lives due to ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo groups, resulting in thousands being displaced. Following the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, the central government imposed President's Rule in Manipur, and the state assembly, which is set to serve until 2027, has been suspended.
